Feeling overwhelmed at your job? Shift your focus from your job onto this one thing.

“Most people work at keeping their job, rather than doing a good job.  If you’re the former, you’re leading a meaningless life.  If you’re the latter, keep up the good work.”  George Lois

George calls it “…doing a good job” – I call it doing your work vs. your job.  The words are different – the idea is the same…

Simply put there is a difference between…

  • Doing your job:  doing the tasks that make up your job description for a business/an employer in exchange for money and/or recognition.  What follows is a sense that others hold the power to value, reward, and evolve us in our career.  At best – what follows is an ability to pay bills, an ability to detach from others who annoy us at times, and fleeting moments of fulfillment.

  • Doing your work: doing the work you were put on this planet to do for others we relate to and access through an employer or a business in exchange for evolving our consciousness.  What follows is a sense that we have power to value, reward and evolve the consciousness of others.  What follows is a sustained sense of fulfillment, relatedness and connection with others, ease in identifying opportunities to progress in our career and life, and operate from our greatest earning potential – money and recognition follow effortlessly.

Doing “your work” is creating something.  It’s thrilling because it’s adventurous, brave and validating!  It connects you with what you are passionate about and manifests miracles!  Doing your job is doing something too – something safe – cautious.  It conditions you to not expect miracles or understand what you are truly passionate about.

Doing your job means being focused on many different things – all mostly have to do with how things impact YOU – here are 5 examples of what you might be focused on if you are doing “a job”:

  1. tasks
  2. how others seem to react to you and your contributions and wondering what that means for you
  3. covering your ass (your reputation)
  4. wondering why others don’t value you as much as you think they should
  5. getting out of work on time or as often as you can (i.e. vacations, leaving “on time”, feeling a “need” to get out for lunch or breaks, etc.)

Doing your job – even if you like it – will never alone sustain your greatest sense of happiness and fulfillment nor will it enable the most rewards you can ever achieve in your career.  With being worried about so many things, is there any wonder you may be feeling overwhelmed at your job?  Shift your focus from your job onto this one thing.  Doing “your work”.

Doing “your work” means being focused on 1 thing:

  1. finding and participating in opportunities to bring value to those you serve (that includes the people you interact with everyday but it’s especially mindful of those you don’t get to see face to face everyday – or even at all – the customer or community of people you ultimately impact).

That means enabling those you impact to feel a way that you believe can lift a burden for them or lighten their load in life in some way.  You see the tasks you are accountable to perform as a starting point – not as a boundary you aren’t responsible to operate outside of to be helpful.

Often we think of our job and our work as one in the same.  Or we think of our work as the place where we perform our job.  The dictionary defines job as:  a piece of work.  And it defines work as:  activity in which one exerts strength or faculties to do or perform something:  sustained physical or mental effort to overcome obstacles and achieve an objective or result.

I offer you the opportunity to think of your work as what you do for others – the ultimate intention you strive to enable, in your unique way, for a specific audience.  An audience you naturally care about and even relate to personally.  Although you may be focused on a specific audience – you will no doubt positively impact others outside of that audience as well.
